Portrait of Hans Baumgarte, 1953

Portrait of Hans Baumgarte, 1953
Oil on masonite, 50 x 40 cm

The portrait shows the recently married Hans Baumgarte (1917-1999) aged 36. It was the second marriage for both spouses. They met at an exhibition, and Baumgarte then commissioned the young artist with portraits of his two sons from his first marriage.

This striking portrait depicts the industrialist as befits his position and status in a white shirt, jacket and bowtie in front of a neutral background. His alert, penetrating gaze indicates determination, and also a certain severity. October 1953 saw the official opening of a new foundry, one of the most important projects in the company's history. Ruth Baumgarte provided the artistic direction that gave the site its own distinctive style. She also officially "inaugurated" the two newly installed cupola furnaces.
